GPA EDC Heads to Tokyo!

GPA EDC MEETS WITH ASIAN INVESTMENT ATTRACTION AND TOURISM OFFICIALS TO PROMOTE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN THE GREATER PETERBOROUGH AREA

Dan Taylor, President & CEO of the Greater Peterborough Area Economic Development Corporation (GPA EDC) is traveling to Asia this week on personal business. While on his trip, he is stopping over in Tokyo to promote Peterborough investment opportunities such as aviation & aerospace, energy, clean water technology, health & creative industries and tourism.

Taylor says “I was already heading to Asia so the airfare was not a factor, we saw this as a good opportunity to promote the Peterborough region and look for foreign investment attraction and tourism opportunities for a relatively low cost.” He goes on, “when we called the investment office in Tokyo they indicated that some of their major opportunities aligned with ours. This solidified our decision to visit Tokyo.”

  • His itinerary includes visits with four Provincial and Federal representatives who are key economic development contacts in foreign markets:
  • Robert Ulmer, head of the Ontario International Marketing Centre in Tokyo – Investment Attraction• Kathleen Donohue, Team Leader & Senior Trade Commissioner, Canadian Embassy – Tokyo (Aerospace and Defence, Environmental Industries, Health Industries, Information and Communications Technologies)• Ms. Tomoko Okada, Marketing Manager, Ontario Tourism Japan, and Megumi, Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership (OTMP)’s Travel Trade Representative – Tourism Promotion• “Ontario Style” (website promoting Ontario travel to Japanese tourists) Editor and Photographer – Pubic Relations
  • Taylor arrived in Tokyo late on Wednesday evening and has meetings on Thursday and Friday at which time the investment attraction portion of the trip will conclude.
  • GPA EDC representatives regularly network with and visit Canada’s foreign posts. Foreign diplomats share knowledge regarding market conditions, sensitivities, opportunities and investment leads in the countries in which they reside that have the potential to translate into valuable opportunities, business development and job creation for the Peterborough region.

Taylor’s interview with Ontario Style will appear on their blog following his visit to Tokyo. He hopes to get a sense of opportunities in Japan specifically, and Asia in general, that fit with Peterborough’s economy.

The mission of the GPA EDC is to assist the City and County of Peterborough with the development of an environment that facilitates the creation of wealth and expanded employment in a manner that increases our citizens’ standard of living and improves quality of life.
