Local athlete Zac Fryia is harnessing his previous work experience to operate a full-time summer business through the Ministry of Economic Development and Innovation’s Summer Company Program. Zac’s Custom Cuts provides affordable residential lawn care and property maintenance services in Peterborough and the surrounding area.
Zac grew up in the south end of Peterborough where he attended Holy Cross Secondary School. He was quiet and reserved, but gained confidence through athletics. He played several sports, including field lacrosse and baseball, but nothing compared to his true passion: hockey. Zac inherited his love of hockey from his father, Mike Fryia, who played for the Petes in the early 1970s. Zac goal tended for the Peterborough Stars for several years and was drafted to the Petes in 2008. His hockey commitments led him to stay in Peterborough where he enrolled in Business Administration at Fleming College.
Zac’s skills extend beyond goaltending. His past work experiences taught him the tricks of the trade for attaining a lush, green lawn. While working for a local landscaping company, Zac learned how to properly seed, fertilize, and lay sod. He also worked at a golf course where he learned how to aerate lawns and how to alternate cutting patterns to optimize the aesthetics of the grass.
It is Zac’s unique skill set that allows him to confidently provide lawn treatments, such as aeration and fertilization. “Aeration is often overlooked, but it can revitalize a sickly lawn”, he says. According to Zac, aeration helps to make your lawn healthier by stimulating grass growth, increasing drought resistance, reducing soil compaction, and discouraging lawn diseases. Zac cautions that certain lawn treatments are best left to the professionals, “when fertilizing is done right, it can give you a healthier, greener, and thicker lawn…but if it is done improperly, it can lead to patching and burning”.
Zac’s Custom Cuts offers residential lawn cutting, trimming, seeding, aeration, fertilization, and sodding. His clients enlist his services on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and much of his business comes from referrals.
